Date Created4th April 2020CommentsWendy Bruce We used to go & watch these races - went up from Whataroa with Paul Derry
Jack Lorraine Green What years would that be Wendy
Graham Southward Yep was some great racing esp at easter
Dave Bj Henderson I remember watching the Kelly’s from blaketown race.
Dave Lyes We used to bike out and watch uncle Ted Andrew's (Wacko), Peter Knight snr, Tud Ross and Teddy Thorne. Happy days.
Christine Stewart Remember watching them as a young child
John Kerr We used to come up from Fox, dad had the first jet boat on the West Coast which he built in the shed at home, Miss Fox. Bit more sedate racing then compared to Peter Knights machines in later years!
Paul Agnes Smith The smell of castor oil in the '50's..and the dusty road out at the end of the day....
June Williams My dad was the club captain for many years for the yacht and power boat club at Hans Bay.Sally Gallant Cathie Martin
Kathleen Power Remember that
Arthur Dehn I raced my Hydro plane. There in 1962 , sprang a leak , raced for the shore , sank onto my trailer, very lucky !!!
Brent Jones My Uncle Pete Jones built and raced his own hydroplanes from scratch on a shoestring budget and gave Peter Knight a run for his money; Spot, Hot Spot and a few others. Still has Obsession that gets raced by his son Peter on occasions.. The club is still going but small in number in comparison with with the 60's and 70's. Many records were set on Lake Waihapo and Lake Kanierie by West Coasters. There are lots of tales of mishaps and adventures. Just ask Pete one day you spot him in Hoki and he can enlighten you. I recall one 'adventure', Alan Arnold losing his steering and the throttle jammed coincidentally coming in to shore and his hydroplane shot across the carpark and main road to land in the bush at Lake Waihapo, Whataroa and he was unscathed but for his pride.
June Williams Kevin I wish I could rewind back to those days. A great childhood on the coast.
Alex McDougall The best - Mum would pack the car on the first day of Christmas school holidays and head to Kaniere to the bach where we would stay for the duration of the holidays. Happy days/
Lois Little Dad always had us out there had my first Ferris wheel ride and then to swim at .....sunny bite....
Chocolate waterGlenn Johnston Yes Dave Lyes I remember biking out there to watch the boat racing. Not with you but certainly with some of your cousins. I see Dave Maitland has posted and I'm sure we biked out there at times along with his brother Robin (Knobby), Pop Jones, Colin Bell & others. No one has mentioned the big boat Aquanaut powered by an aeroplane engine that was very noisy and very fast but not that flash at cornering. It used to leave a dangerous wake if ahead of the hydroplanes.
Dave Lyes Glenn Johnston Dave Maitland mentioned the Aquanaut above. But yes, heaps of us used to bike, never had gears on my bike and Butchers hill seemed a killer, I laugh when I see it now.
Glenn Johnston Dave. Yes he did, I didn't expand his post and missed the last bit about Aquanaut! I remember those times quite well and yes we supported Wacko owned and raced by friend and classmate Nigel's father Ted Andrews who was of course your uncle (mothers brother in law)
Glenn Johnston Dave Lyes Butchers Hill wasn't sealed back then and would get quite corrugated at times so definitely a tougher proposition than these days though the altitude gain is quite small. One of your cousins had a mishap biking back from the lake going down that hill. (lost it in the loose gravel)
Dave Lyes Glenn Johnston I had forgotten that aspect Glenn and I now recall excessive speed myself on one occasion and ending up in the scrub. I didnt lose any bark though. Just a minor learning curve about breaks in loose gravel. Lol.
