Date Created4th April 2020CommentsAnthea Keenan :) Heslans came from Ireland in 1874. Barney & his wife took up land at Duck Crk Kokatahi.. Barney Heslan took interest in community affairs = A&P assn., Director of Kokatahi Dairy - but he drowned (leaving three daughters & two sons) Richard & Patrick farmed in partnership after their father died but Richard died of the dreaded Influenze Epidemic and Paddy (Patrick) m Aunty Ethel Growcott .. but Paddy also died early 1945 and Aunty Ethel raised the kids and also had land upper Koiterangi...where Grandad & Grandma developed land before Dad took over.. the Hokitika Gorge swing bridge was used to get animals across the river and hunting etc. Pretty sure Harry is still up Karamea.Jessie Guy Great photo Anthea and good but a sad story

Mary Moffitt Love the bit about the ties. Our baker who used to deliver bread to all of the houses in Stillwater was a huge man and could not get a belt to fit him. Instead, he used three ties knotted together. Ties had a real use in those days.
I don't know if it was meant to be rude, but we thought his name was 'Fatty Haussmann'. Everybody used the name and he seemed to accept it happily.
Why can't we get bread and milk delivered like that nowadays, especially now.
