DescriptionMining at Cascade, by underground means, commenced in 1926 following the construction of a 12km long flume down Cascade Creek to the bins near the Buller Gorge railway.

The mine produced 460,000 tons of coal until a huge flood wiped out the flume in 1954.. All coal was transported by rail from these bins to Westport for shipment around NZ.

The Cascade mine was reopened in 1959 by Bob Pratt and Bill Craddock and mining continued for a further 10 years. Coal was transported by truck uphill to Denniston.

In 1983 Harold Clementson opened the Cascade as an opencast operation.

Myron Caldwell That was something I put on my bucket list, having the trains shunt LA wagons to their own bins. It was great engineering feat. .
