About this image
DescriptionThis photo was taken by: I A Inkster - Greymouth so can only assume that it was the Home Guard. My Grandfather W F Lucas (Bill) is marching 2nd from front right side line looking at photo. We were always told he was too young for WW1 and too old for WW2. He appears to be keeping his distance from the leader!

Were they the home guard...
Getting old...
Roger Howell Maurice Teen told me his father was in the home guard and they drilled with broomsticks for rifles.
Clearly not true.
Carolyn Luck My grandfather was in the home guard in Greymouth. They often got called out when they could see the lights of Japanese boats not too far out at sea.
Yvonne John Mckenzie My father was in the home in Greymouth he did say about the Japanese
Vincent Knapp I remember that from my young days the home guard marching around Blaketown they went past De goldi,s house opposite the hall There was about 15 or 18 men all in uniform I guess i would have been about 5 at the time----- they had trenches and machine gun posts along the beach
Yvonne John Mckenzie Roger Howell did Maurice Teen live in Blaketown if it's the same Maurice he lived almost across the road from me and went to school with him
Vincent Knapp There were Teens lived on the corner of Blake st and O,Grady st His nick name was Chick Teen
Alan Messenger My father was in the home guard. I remember he had the full uniform and a rifle. I remember they had a machine gun post on the beach near the aerodrome.
Yvonne John Mckenzie Alan Messenger They also went to Barrytown and went up the hill
Sandy Southerwood My dad was in the Hokitika Home Guard.About this time I got Scarlet Fever and was in quarentine at my Nanas. There was a big sign on the gate saying we were in quarantineStella Wadsworth There were several home guard men from west coast area that were stationed t the secret ammunition station in Wairau Valley...think I have the names all older men.....
Yvonne Lawson My Dad was in the home guard.
Geoffrey King I take it that it was World ar 2 as mention is made of the Japanese about to invade ? their lights nearby out at sea.....so where in Greymouth would this photo be taken Could it be along Lord St looking towards the Gas works perhaps some one enlight us please
Yvonne John Mckenzie Could be Guinness Street
Robyn Mainey My pop was in the home guard. Fred Trainor.
Judy Bagnall My dad was in the home guard in Ahaura. We’ve got his medal. He told us some very funny stories about the Ahaura home guard.
John Rosanowski "Dad's Army" was a great bit of fun. We all enjoyed it, but it was very disrespectful to those who served in the Home Guard. In NZ, we really were under threat of invasion in the early part of WWII. Our home guard were prepared to be first responders and give their lives if necessary.
Donald Pearson I was friendly with a Bill Lucas in the early 40s,they lived in Shakespeare St south, opposite the railway cottages.
Carol Linklater Do you know who your grandfather's brothers were? Just wondering because my grandfather Henry Lucas had brothers a Bill was one .off hand I can't remember others . A nephew maybe Darcy drove railcars and he lived in Greymouth. The Lucas family originally from Dunedin.
