Howard Armstrong - Mill St Runanga,died of dysentry in a Cairo hospital 20th May 1941 aged 23 years.

DescriptionThis is a picture of my Uncle Howard Armstrong son of Wilmot and Louisa Armstrong, they lived on the corner of Mill St and the 7 Mile rd Runanga. Howard went overseas in WW2 and sadly died of dysentry in a Cairo hospital 20th May 1941 aged 23 years.

That was in war time a bigger loss of than in battle same with the First World War more people died from starvation and sickness than on the battlefield very sad wiped out two generations of fine young men (and Women) from all around the world

Seeing the pic above of the PWD workers on the roadworks reminded of Dad ( Howard's brother) telling me that Howard had been up the coast working on the road's like these guy's and how at the time he probably saw it as a way out and an adventure. My cousin Helen Vincent who was raised by our Grandparent's ( Howard's Mum and Dad} told me not too many years ago that Granddad would every night go into the front room look at Howard's picture and then head off to bed. War has no winners
