John and Thomas Seddon served in WW1

DescriptionThese two young men went off to fight in WW1.
The youngest son, John Stuart Spottswood Seddon, signed up at the beginning of the year in 1914. He served in the British Army in the Royal Artillery during the whole of the war, suffered greatly both during and after the war ended, and spent considerable periods in Ashburn Hall in Dunedin. His diagnosis was "war strain", which we now know as PTSD.

His older brother, Thomas Edward Youd Seddon, had been elected into his father's electorate of Westland in 1906, and once conscription was commenced in 1916 Tom enlisted, and went off to Egypt and then to the battlefields of northern France. Like his younger brother, he saw a great deal of fighting and was eventually sent to America on a fundraising campaign.

During the time of his military service Tom remained a sitting member of Parliament, and had been paired with Downie Stewart, an MP from Dunedin.
Tom lost his seat in 1928, and ended his working life as Chair of the War Pensions Board.
Their older brother, Richard John Spottswood Seddon, was killed in northern France at the very end of WW1, and he is buried in Bepaume, France, in a military cemetery. He is mentioned on the Cenotaph in Cass Square, Hokitika.
