Torpedo bottles

DescriptionIf you were living in the west coast between 1860 -1890 and enjoyed drinking soda pop your drink would have more than likely been housed in a glass 'torpedo ' bottle. I think there were at least 6 different coast firms which had their names printed on there torpedo bottles

Date Created24th April 2020CommentsRhys Devlin There are 8 different firms that used them on the West Coast. Before they had embossed there was are real struggle between manufacturers on whos bottles where whos upon collection at hotels which lead to court cases between Grogans, Blackmores and Strike. A company could only operate on so many gross bottles and if they did not get there returns back they would operate at a loss. The torpedo bottle or Hamilton patent as its known changed this on the West Coast. Firms then had there names on there bottles to identify whos where whos. There are examples from 1870 1880 of manufactures scratching there names into there bottles.

Doris Blanchard I remember those bottles including the ones with the marbles. We sold them in our family grocery store in Greymouth in the 1940s.
