On this ANZAC day here’s a great tale about my Grandfather (Richard Garraway) who served, and got injured, at both Gallipoli and the Western Front during WW1.

My mother “Grannie Olive” told my son Marc and I this tale of

“The Ghost of Paddy Burrows” around the camp fire on our South Westland hunting trip in 2001 ……. As she relayed this eerie tale to us under a full moon, our eyes became transfixed eyes like saucers, and silently we took extra big sucks on our “Southern Nectar” Speight’s stubbies as this riveting tale was told!

The punch line being that when our hunting trip had ended we were to pass through the town of Ahaura where mum was bought up and apparently Paddy worked as the local publican and was buried there somewhere.

Subsequently we did stop off at the Ahaura Cemetery to look for Paddy Burrows grave …. When we found it Mum balled her eyes out for ages and was silent (which was unusual for her!) for ages …….Funny old world eh ….. and who says there isn’t something beyond this material world
