DescriptionThis somewhat precarious system for crossing the Perth River near Hughes Creek in the Whataroa district, Westland, was built by a gold prospector during the Great Depression. It was photographed by mountaineer, librarian and author John Pascoe in January 1935 and hand-tinted later.

Pascoe, Priestly Thomson (in photograph), Duncan Hall and Gavin Malcolmson were on their way down the valley after being the first people to find and cross the Garden of Eden ice plateau in the Southern Alps. They had left the Rangitata Valley in December carrying food for 16 days and, because they were all smokers, 1.2 kg of tobacco, 420 cigarettes and 17 cigars.

Date Created2nd May 2020CommentsJim Webber I can remember using a similar 3 wire bridge over the Crooked river to gain access to the Evans river. If I shot a deer it had to be pushed out into the current of the Crooked river, get across the wire bridge as fast as possible and run down stream to recover the carcass when it got close enough to the other side!

Arthur Dehn Jim Webber àre you talking about the Crooked river between Te Kinga and Rotomanu , that had a foot bridge inthe 1950s , we used to ford that with our pickup truck

Jim Webber This is in the upper part of the river well above the top bridge to Bell Hill, access was by a bush road through the Burgess farm block, it was milled a number of times eventually a road bridge was put in to access timber on the Kopara side of the river.
