Steve Lowe The railway between Hokitika and Greymouth opened in 1893... Before the Taramakau rail bridge was opened passengers crossed the river in a "cage" - flying fox. Hence, I imagine to connect with the tram from the north side of the Taramakau River to Greymouth.
