DescriptionThese photos show Carroll Hut on the Kelly Range in Arthur’s Pass National Park as it neared completion in the late 1930s.

Built by the West Coast Alpine Club, Carroll Hut was opened in November 1938. It was named after the club captain, 22 year old Patrick Carroll who had started the project but died in a fall on Ranfurly Glacier in February 1938.

Anyone who has walked up the steep track to the Kelly tops will recognise the dedication of the club members who carried up timber and corrugated iron, some of whom made 20 trips. The hut burnt down in 1980 and has been replaced twice.

Trevor Keith Scott Hi Viv, I spent a lot of time up Kelly Range, specially checking the TV cable from the bottom to the top and doing repairs to the cable. The cable was layed down the slip area so had to be checked regular, spent many a night at the hut. Loved the area and my old mates the Kea's they were a cheeky lot. Spent 3 different times at Otira and loved every minute of it. Still think of Otira often.

Viv Sheehan Hi Trevor, the cable was taken up the main track by each man had like eight loops each over the shoulder and in convoy climbed to the translator and the cable was thrown down the gravel slope to the generator at the bottom. This aloud 12v at top translator to operate.

David Hall Greenstone (Greymouth) Venturer Scouts used it regularly in the 1960,s. Took our wooden Skis up to ski in the basin. Also took coal up for the fire.

Brian Gillooly Went up there a lot in the mid 50s. West Coast Alpine Club had put a leanto storage area on the back of the Hut. Also the small Ski Tow that worked well. Had to carry a I gallon can of petrol up if you wanted to ski.

Brian Gillooly At night we would use a Tilly lamp outside , lots of reflected light to continue skiing. Magic times and memories.

Donald Pearson Went up to Kelly's hut with WCAC in the winter of 46 ,had to trudge through snow right up to the hut,lit a fire to thaw out,great site.

Ian N Leona Dixon A brass plaque was placed inside the hut in memory of Carroll, sadly the hut was razed around 1980
