DescriptionThis crockery soup bowl fragment found on the Hokitika beach some time back gives an insight in to an old Hokitika business. A Kellers Hotel Hokitika logo is readible. W Keller started out as a cafe proprieter in Revell Street in the mid 1860's and soon afterwards bought the next door hotel on the Revell - Weld Street corner and traded as the Cafe National Hotel. Over the years the name changed to Kellers Hotel, then Hotel Westland and the site is now known as Stumpers and and still operates as a cafe and hotel.

Glenn Johnston I can reasonably accurately date this piece of crockery because it was in fill dumped where the late 1913/1914 erosion chewed out a section of beach. The back stamp shows it was imported to NZ by Gibsons and Paterson who were active in importing crockery from England circa 1910 - 1916. It is thus likely this soup bowl was broken and discarded about 1914.
