DescriptionThe drive to Arthur’s Pass used to be a lot more hazardous! A Morris car is stuck in the ford across Broad Stream, near Bealey Spur, in 1948. This gravel road is now the sealed and much-improved State Highway 73 between Christchurch and the West Coast.

Trevor Keith Scott.." I worked for Railways in Otira for a few years and we were transporting cars through the tunnel to Aurthers Pass, as the road was closed by deep snow. Dr Nixon from Greymouth was in a rush to get to Ch Ch so we put him on the next flattop to go through the tunnel, that was when he told me he was in a race with Dr Dallas also from Greymouth. There was a bet on to see who could get to Ch Ch first 5 Quid, Dr Dallas went through the other Pass ( Forgot Name) Dr Nixon must have won as next time I went to see him it was no charge. Dr Brian Nixon has always been our family Dr for year before & after."

Frances Adank My first car was a 1948 Morris 8. Black with burgundy upholstery.

John Paget My first car was a Morris Ten 1948. it was two years older than me.
James Hobbs Had one when got married .y wife learned to drive in one went on our honeymoon in one those were the days there a great one on display in Dunedin Museum

Allan Vincent my dad walked me up the goat track as far up it as we could that use to be the original road the stagecoach took. the heck with that . it went up and over the mammoth hill slide collapse that the new viaduct and tunnel now traverse.

Trevor Keith Scott Hi Heather, After serving in Otira at 3 different times I have a VERY good knowledge of that road to Aurther;s Pass. Mainly by rail, But I have driven the Railways bus over that Gorge more than a few times loaded with men and track Repair machinery. You could meet a new slip 1/2 way up, which makes it interesting!! The guys wanted to walk over this particular slip to watch me drive the bus over it, to me it was quite Orgasmic when you hit a soft spot not forgetting the edge of the road is VERY close and you are still on an angle on the slip. Coming home not so bad after fixing a derailment as the Council boys had gone up and cleared it by then. This was only one time of many while traveling over the pass.....as I said at times QUITE ORGASMIC!!
