My father, George Taylor, was the local policeman at the Cobden Police Station in 1945/6. We lived in the Police House on Sturge Street and used the jail house as a place to play during the time we lived there and went to the old brick school on the opposite corner.There was an old large building further along the street toward the hill which was also used as a classroom We moved from there to the one-man police station in Trentham, Upper Hutt, about 1950.
When the Dutch family were turning that old gun station into their home there were quite a few people making it difficult for them by vandalizing their equipment. I think they built a kind of rail pulley system to get their gear up the incline. My father was called out often to look into the interference being caused by some people.

Karen Jackson My late mother-in-law shifted into the police house in Sturge Street, Cobden in 1935 with her parents and brothers. She was 11. Her father was police constable Alan Baynes. I am unsure how long the family lived in this house.

Trish Rennie I believe that Stella still lives out at Rutherglen.. Had some quite lengthy discussions with her over the years and I believe that their early years in Cobden were not so pleasant which is sad...lots of teasing and taunting etc.

Kuan Tai Lucas John Barker drove a van for Lucas transport delivering parcels also drove the night cart in Cobden moved to Fitzgerald St. I remember Stella.

George Gardner That family were after I left Cobden. The tramway hoist was originally set up when the gun emplacement was built and the large old shed further up Sturge St was the Cobden school hall. We had Caledonian dances in there every month.
