Didn't seem right when I first looked at it but took a while to figure it out.

Dale Wilhelm No the snow is about right for late spring/early summer.
The clue is you are looking up the valley towards the pass, the shingle fan on the right is Rough creek where the police station is these days, but......

Dale Wilhelm In fact the snow at the right edge of the photo is possibly Goldney Glacier which should be another clue
Christine Hogg is this not a view looking from west to east?

Rod Berry Dale Wilhelm. Your clue says we are looking up the valley towards the pass, i see a problem too with this photo. But (your but) is it the riverbed is on the wrong side of the rail and state highway. Another clue is I suggest that this picture is of a slide and should be .... ......

Dale Wilhelm Exactly, well done. It was the railway line that made me doubt myself at first, then I started to recognise features. A quick look on the topo map confirmed I wasn't going mad. Really nice image though.

Glenn Johnston Ok so it is looking up the Bealey toward Arthurs Pass over what is now Arthurs Pass village. I think I can see where the railway heads across the river to the tunnel portal. Well picked Dale Wilhelm; my first instinct as to location was correct despite it being a mirror image.
