9th Intake National Service

This may bring back a few memories for these blokes from Nelson, Marlborough, Buller, West Coast and Timaru in the 9th Intake National Service in the early 1960s at Burnham.

Wayne Chapman Marble job Paul. Great days. Bernie Preston should be there somewhere.Same intake as Ray Baty & myself. Only beat him once in a barrack room scuffle. Tickled him to submission.

Terry Kingi I was in the 16th intake

Charles Cotton I think this was 1964. Most of the names escape me. Baty / Big Raymond is the big guy in middle and I am over his right shoulder with the Timaru hard case (Smith?) fisherman next to me. Pat Albano 2nd in front row with the Deer Hunter 4th along who walked out for 4 days to get bus to come to camp. Wayne Chapman / Chappy a carpenter if I remember right is that you in the middle at the back?

Jim Ward 1964 I was in Burnham, National service, I thought mine was the 7th intake, (Sept) but could be wrong, was attached to 6th Independent Field Squ...Corporal Herewini was our hut commander..!!

John Armstrong Just on the gun issue we had military training in Auckland and in 1965 we had a big army day and I got to fire the SLR WHICH were fairly new
Our rifle range had 303 s sleaved down to 22 s
They even fired a mortar round from one side of the school to the other you wouldn’t be able to do that today

Heather Newby Dad taught us kids to shoot with a 303.. it sure did buck!! we practised at a quarry at the bottom of Mt Sewell, out past Coal Creek and towards Taylorville.

Ian Miller I was fortunate to miss the birthday ballot. However, I did some time at Burnham. My most anxious moment was during a mortar firing exercise. I watched one "bomb" go only about thirty feet into the air

Ian Miller Wretched computer. Anyway, I dived for the ground - most others just stood there. Fortunately, the front end did no work any better than the rear end.

Bill Garth CMT was for 18 year olds and finished in 1959. Black Budget Fags went from a Bob to 1 Bob 10 pence. Labour only had 3 years then National brought in National Service. Started in 1962 I was 3rd Intake January 1963 at Wairoru. 5 Coasters Barry Maughan Billy Mitchell Gerry Pratt Gerry McKendry and myself. Picked up Kerry Hegarty in Westport. Great time . Left Greymouth on Newmans at 9am to Nelson . Army truck to Picton Ferry 11pm to Wellington Railway bus from Wellington to Wairoru 8am straight into it.

Roger O'Regan Remember school military and the sandpaper suits at RDHS. Only thing I ever won was a birthday ballot but turned down for asthma. Best failure ever!
