Don Hutton Hay's was previously White's Corner in the early 1950s. Further left past the hotel was Eddie Flood's barber shop where we had our hair cut from infancy. Eddie was the father of Jack / John Flood a long time teacher at GTHS.

Remember George well - the site was an empty space when we arrived, it was used for a raffle stall if memory serves.

Looking at this photo you notice the verandahs over the footpaths. Most of the CBD had footpath shelter like this. Most of them came tumbling down or sustained considerable damage in the Inangahua Earthquake at 05.24am on 24 May 1968. Will I ever forget that morning. I had just finished duty.

From memory the wrecking ball broke off the cable a nd ended up in the basement.

Gavin Davy - from memory, the barrel basement was a big hatch in the footpath which was raised when fresh 36 gallon kegs were slid down when delivered by the breweries.

Great place to stand out of the rain on a Friday night then go into the milk bar next door. Woolworths and Mc kenzies just along the street.
