DescriptionGlenn Johnston.."I found a 1974 Westland High School prize-giving programme this afternoon while searching for something else. It was the final year for Principal Bill Bryant and there were a lot of speeches and some hymn singing. The 74 school year was memorable for me in so far that I won the senior cross country for a second time and passed UE. Here is the sports awards page. Some named are no longer with us but others are hale and hearty and still local. Glenn Johnston Donald Thorn was the top athlete in my high school junior through to senior year grades for running events up to 800 metres distance. Sad that cancer took him so young. We were in the same class back in 1974.
Paula Tulloch Alison Ken said he can’t even remember Sole playing rugby, but remembers Sole beating him in javelin!!
Glenn Johnston Paula Tulloch Sole (Tony Simpson) & Ken would have played on the same rugby team at times though perhaps not in 74. Sole was good at the shorter athletics sprints usually being in the top few for the 100 metres. Ken placed sometimes in the cross country in his early high school years.

Glenn Johnston Here is a photo from the previous year (1973) of the WHS athletics team. Quite a few of those that got sports awards in 1974 are in this photo from a year earlier.

Glenn Johnston One non standard athletics field event that used to be held was the distance throw of a cricket ball. One guy who was good at this was Bruce Cameron and he didn't even play cricket. Did other schools have such an event as part of their athletics field events?

Sue Washington tragically killed in car accident not long after school in Perth I think it was. Have never seen a swimmer move through the water as effortlessly as her. Phenomenal.

Dave Lyes I used to train with her before and after school and compete in comps in chch with her.

Janet Sutton awesome Janet. Those training sessions in the swimming club before school were murder in the unheated open pool. Had to swim a mile lol. 54 odd lengths of the pool.
I've caught up with her sister a couple of times (Jane?). Works/worked in Ballantynes Menswear in Colombo Street a couple of years back.
