Tony Ring It's hard to believe the Midland Line and the Otira Tunnel were built to perfection with primitive resources many years ago.

Ian Coates Tony Ring yes they were tough and very clever,a lot of interesting history around staircase and avoca,the old fellas would be amazed at the axle loads going over their bridges in the modern day

Phil Millar Staircase is the Viaduct that i nearly fell off on a frosty morning 1979, we were on the walkway underneath carrying tools out to remove loose rivets, when i slipped on the frost.It was John Coull who grabbed me by the scruff of my neck that saved me.Bridge gang number 1 from Foreman of Works Addington.A directive was posted the next day,that no one was allowed on bridges until the sun was on them and the frost had gone.Thanks John Coull.
