Why didn’t they keep heritage buildings,
The post office was so lovely and a focal point of Greymouth,
Heather Newby
yes,, they could have at least kept the facade.. like they do to old buildings in wellington
Steve FitzGerald
Because since 1970, the focus on the systematic demolition of any historical buildings as soon as they become available, to leave one would make it look out of place in the modern town look!
Elton Williams
Awesome place back in the day Miss those years good times
Patrick Pascoe
Looks like Allan Orchard on the left with Tie.
Les Holmes Germanicus
Ere's to the greatest demolition balls-up in the history of the planet.
Grant Callaghan
Go greymouth!!!!....clear out all the heritage..well on the way to winning the souless dump award for Westland..
Carrol Hunter
Grant Callaghan Court house next
Grant Callaghan
Carrol Hunter unbelievable...why don't people stand up to this..there's even a huge financial argument for saving heritage now, look at reefton..wake up Greymouth mayor and council..or are they getting discrete cheques from developers as I hear happened in Westport?
Carrol Hunter
Grant Callaghan European Heritage is not wanted The land owners prefer gorse and not show pride in what they have been given back Look at Victoria Park Great example
Grant Callaghan
Carrol Hunter its not an issue of gorse in town ..lol it still comes down to the council allowing it rather than blaming it on Maori..it's not maori ticking the boxes on council.land lease is a separate issue.i remember back when blanchfeild was trumpeting that they would move the town rather than pay a fair rent for the leases..they were paying peanuts at the time..the Maori owners were ripped off for years..lol..But I digress, let's put the blame where it belongs ,and that's not arahura.it is up to the locals to bring pressure on the council to put a stop to this endless demolition
Phil Millar
Can i guess who the land owner is ?
Janet Mapley
How times have changed. Today that would have a 6 foot fence all around it for public safety.
Bronwen Skates
Totally loved the look at that beautiful building that was replaced with a soul less block . All the lovely Historical buildings that have been pulled down and such a shame no maintenance ever done to keep them from deteriorating in the first place.Annie Van Looy
What a shame

Grant Callaghan hey wise guy -seein youre shootin ya gob off at such a rate of knots on seemingly anecdotal evidence go put your money and bloody daft ideas before the council, then tell us how you get on . Just to correct your info buddy-it was the late Ozzie jackson as mayor of greymouth who told the mawhera corporation the business centre land owners ,that if he had his way he'd have shifted the whole bloody shebang uptown opposite the rec hotel. the euyessore revvys hotel was owned by a guy vercoe from nelson who shagged avbout obviously hoping to get top price for it .Ngai Tahu are putting some new visitors cen tree on the now vacant site. ask tony kokshoorn (xmayor)about the way a certain maori gent removed and desecrated the war memorial gates outside the old grey main school, before Tony led a possee to retrieve them from a paddoc k and have them reinstalled at high st end of Dixon park. tony kokshoorn did a bloody sight more for greymouth than you and your loudmouth knowalls ever will.
Grant Callaghan
Kerry Molloy hmmmm how come I hear the trill of banjos..lol...the eyesore revvys ...lol..says it all kerry.i rest my case.. everyone passes the buck in Greymouth..the council ,and yes that does include your hero kokshorn .kokshorn could have made them save the facade.curious logic..he saved some gates so that exonerates him..yes he has done a lot more than I..the one thing we can agree on Kerry ,lol ..a lot more demolition!!

Carrol Hunter
Grant Callaghan I see you don't even live here ? If you cared so much YOU would know many buildings are being demolished as they are old dirty . neglected and passed their use by date Not worth the money to bring up to complying to earthquake proofing .Just a stroll around town would show you that people are struggling to afford anything more than everyday needs .You dont seem to like Kokshorn Well look at the lagoons ? Tourists camp their every night It is a very popular spot He created a bright new encouraging start to tourism here What have YOU done ?
Grant Callaghan
Carrol Hunter actually I think whether I live here or not is a cheap shot carol..nise try tho..ive probably spent more time living there than you carol but hey..lucky Ive got broad shoulders..the banjo again..i don't dislike kokshorn ,just don't see he's done a hell of a lot to stave off the wrecking ball and I wonder why..but perhaps I should wonder no longer with your ,dirty, neglected ,past their useby and blame the maoris,opinion.. hopefully you are not representative of the respect for heritage in greymouth..a shame.
Incidentally during my time in Westland I rescued an abandoned villa that had sat abandoned for twenty years and now is a valued part of Westland history..lol..what have you done Carol?
Deb Griffiths
Carrol Hunter really hope they save the courthouse
Can i guess who the land owner is ?
Grant Callaghan
Phil Millar as you know the land is leased but the demolition is not the fault of the Maori..much as many in Greymouth would still love to lay the blame on them
Phil Millar
So why is the building being demolished?
Grant Callaghan
Phil Millar because either the council dousnt care..which plainly they don't or they would act,or they're getting backhanders from developers..it seems in Greymouth still,as in my time ,it is easier to blame the ngai Tahu..
Janet Mapley

Stephen Lucas
Sad day for Greymouth it was always my favourite building
Colman Creagh
The demolition people said they would have it down in 3 days..it took them 3 weeks as it was built so sturderly.. the base brick walls were supposed to be hollow inside but they found out the hard way that they were a metre thick..and solid brick.. It was also built well above the then flood levels on the first floor ,with concrete steps up to that level ..an absolute tragic loss to Greymouths history
Denis King
Neat place to work in.
1974-1983. Telegraph office - CPM’s office.
Murray Harris
Left Greymouth in 1988 and never realised how underwhelming the business Center had become on visits back there,it was one thing to tear down the post office and other buildings of similar heritage, can’t argue on the merits of them being demolished but surely when deciding on the replacements they could have been a little more inspiring than the featureless low rise ,low cost look that was chosen, seen better looking site sheds than some of the more recent shops there now.
Moving forward, hopefully design will be a prerequisite in any new builds that appear in the township
Shaun Fahey
