By: Grant Pearson27th Sep 2023 8:10PMThere was a Post Office at Westbrook that was open from 1877 to 1913. Stamps with a Westbrook postmark are rare so it can't have had much business. I'm guessing that it would have been an agency at a store or another retail outlet but can't find out any information on it. Anyone know anything about it?

Westbrook Hotel near Kumara

DescriptionNoeline McCaughan.." Westbrook is on the road to Lake Brunner from Kumara, we used to go over the Taramakau bridge, up and around the hill towards the Greenstone creek. The hotel faced West on the right hand side facing the river. When I knew it , between 1941/47) it was run by Mr Rose and his wife, there were two sons, Jeff and Raymond ( who was at school the same time as me). Mr Rose ran a tobacconist and Men's hair cutting shop in Kumara, adjacent to the Town hall on Seddon street, and Mrs Rose ran the Hotel during the day."

The Westbrook Hotel was owned by my Grandparents in the 1950,s Myra Green , wife of the late Archie Green later married Albert Smith . They lived in the hotel with their daughter Dot and we lived there with them for a while. The pub was burnt down during their ownership presumably by a disgruntled client who had been barred from the hotel. I have photo s of them in the hotel. Myra and Albert then moved to Westport.Map^[1]ContributorPaul Robin

Maggie Riordan Thank you for that map. My great-grandfather, Frank Payn, was one of the Larrikins who found gold at Larrikins. I’ve not seen a map before showing so clearly where it was.

Graham Bishop I am sure the Westbrook Hotel ,prior to 1953 was owned by E ( Teddy Rose )who was also the town clerk for the Kumara Bourour Council .His son Eric was involved in scouting and a group of them cycled out from Greymouth and had an open day at the old firebegrade committee rooms hoping to create an interest in scouting .l remember being shown how to the a reef knot but ended up tiring a granny knot instead .The Westbrook was just about two miles east from Kumara .over the Teremakau River on the way to Greenstone .
