Bill Garth Garth's Hairdressers were next to Calder McKays and Tim Sinnots Menswear. My dad had the only genuine barber's pole in town. It is now at Shantytown. Remember Calder Mckays used to sell kids rocking chairs every Christmas for 2/6d

Joycelyn Hiha yes they did and pegleys had a sports shop on the corner of mawhera quay and Albert street. dads tailor shop on the other corner with tenents jewelry shop and kitchenings bike shop. lot of shops on mawhera quay in those days

Carol McMillan The man in the middle is my Pop. The one to his left is his father. The woman on the right is a Brislane. Yes this is Mawhera Quay, when they shifted to Tainui Street next to Cirrie and Doug Moore the Brislane lady started in opposition at the vacated Mawhera Quay premises. Then from memory when Kilgours moved to Mackay Street the Brislanes moved to the Tainui Street vacated shop.

Paula Owen that is because it is 1925, plastic bags weren't invented to save the trees until about 1959 and plastic packaging wasn't popular until the 1960's :D
