About this image
Description This is me (Brian Clift), front row second from the right as Jeannie mentioned. It was taken in 1965 making me 11 years old at the time. It’s a photo of the West Coast team at the South Island Under 12 Soccer Tournament in Nelson. There are two other lads from Runanga in the picture, second row far left (name escapes me) and second row far right (Alan Hinks). This is the official team photo so I guess there are a few copies floating around. I love the fact that everyone is wearing square-toed rugby boots, not very effective by todays standards but very fashionable none the less.
I found the accompanying newspaper clipping tucked behind another photo in a tattered old picture frame a few years back. It helps set the date and the event but unfortunately it doesn’t tell the whole story. The final outcome of the tournament was that West Coast only scored two goals all tournament (not counting the own goal), surprisingly, one of them by me . We got the wooden spoon and I believe Nelson won the tournament (home town advantage).Date of Photo1965Map[1] ContributorEd Dando
