Such a shame to lose the champagne that got through the earthquake as well as all the other things that today’s young ones may have been interested in

The Cox family were proprietors when it burn down. They were previously our neighbors in Redwoods Vallley before they moved to the Lyell. We always called there on the way to and from the coast, great spot.

Stayed there a few times while surveying in the area. Was there the day after the fire. Tragic loss.Can still see the walls covered in photos and artifacts of the gold found in the area.

We used to drive from Hokitika to Nelson in the 1950s. I remember the hotel and Dad telling me about the Lyell

Linda Hughes I visited this hotel on the way to Nelson in the 50s. Was it owned by the Mangos (?) family then?

Joy Beveridge Not sure of dates, think maybe they owned it earlier, my Mum (Chrissie Pupich) worked there and she spoke of her time there and the Mangos family. We never passed the hotel, a sure stop, going to New Creek or the Coast.Noeline McCaughan
The last person to own the Hotel had a big selection of old bottles, many of the still capped. I have a small whisky bottle given to my father just prior to the demise of the hotel.

I stopped at the Hotel several times when on Newmans Bus to Nelson. It was a comfort stop and a cuppa.
