DescriptionThis is an early picture of my uncle John Leonard Coombes who was born in Fredericton, NB, Canada on July 11, 1918. Unbeknownst to us, he later moved to NZ and worked in the mines and while working there, he passed away. Trying to find him was the most difficult but rewarding time of my life. Thank you to Ian Haussmann for his kindness and attention to his grave.

Sharon Thorne I’m not sure if I have the name of the mine that he worked in. I will see if I have that information. But I received actual letters in the mail from a couple of men who said they remember him being at the mine where they worked.

Sharon Thorne Vincent Knapp thank you for that information! You can’t imagine the joy I feel when I know that someone remembers him. My parents and my aunts and uncles have all passed away. I only have 2 pictures of him. (I wish I could find a picture of him before he died. )And I was just a small girl when he left Canada. My mother and grandmother tried for years to find him and when I was old enough, I tried too. But it wasn’t until the age of the computer and I figured out how to use it, that I made any progress.

Sharon Thorne I would give anything for one of the last photos of him. I know he was tall and big with dark hair. He reminds me of my cousin who passed away years ago.
