DescriptionThe old Boat Horse, used in towing boats up the Buller. Before the road was made, the cargo or long boats were used on the Buller River from 1865 to 1877 and traded as far up river as the Lyell, boats were manned by three or four men and two horses were taken for towing, the boats were forty feet long and nine feet wide, with a carrying capacity of ten tons, the trips sometimes lasted a fortnight and the freight charge was £20 per ton, if weather conditions were too bad passengers could shelter in the bush (G HOWARD print)

Yes Bob. The holes in the limestone rocks from the anchor poles are still visible, as is the old Archers punt sunk in the river.

Roger O'Regan That brings back a memory that has been tucked away at the back of my brain for about eighty years, visiting somewhere on the Inangahua and walking with a group comprising my parents and other folk and seeing what was spoken of as "one of the barges". All I could see was a rectangular shape lying under water.
