There was a drilling rig on the Kumara strait back in the 60’s/70’s

Definitely NOT the radio tower at Kumara. It was triangular tower with, I think, 3 sets of guy wires to hold it up, balanced on a large white insulator at the bottom. There was another large insulator separating the two sections above half way up. I climbed it for repairs a number of times when working in Greymouth '69 to'95.

My view is a drilling rig. Early 1960s. There was a lot of interest in oil seeps at Kotuku from memory as well.

Bob Laing South American oil company. I remember a convoy of their trucks driving through Harihari in the 60’s. The well at Kumara was capped.

Roger No. This one went to Blackwater near Murchison, but memory hazy. The one stored in Whataroa drilled at Hari Hari then Teddy Gibbs property mouth of Waiho river then storage. But memory hazy.. Would stand corrected but rig T Kumara Junction was pretty light derrick

I remember the size of some of the prime movers and trailers, but my favourite was the Ford F150. Remember tow starting it and having a fang up the road.
Didn't all that stuff eventually go back overseas ?

Harry wellman was always under the opinion the there will only be small amounts of oil which are probably off the Bruner coal measures also there is are no large pressure domes which may indicate an oil reserve
