DescriptionTiger Moth ZK-AFW of West Coast United Aero Club at Greymouth. Plane was impressed into the RNZAF in October 1939 and moved to Taieri. The date of the photo is probably late 1939. This is likely one of the earliest colour photos taken on the Coast. It is a Dufaycolour slide in my father's Bruce Burrell's slide collection. I know nothing about how he obtained the colour film but it is likely others on the coast were using it around the same time. Anyone know of early colour use on the Coast?

Don Hutton I would agree with the date because the McBrearty Maternity Annexe in the background just above and beyond AFW on the fuselage was funded by Mickey Savage's "cradle to grave" social security policy about that time. My sister was born there in 1942. The…See More

Date Created11th August 2020CommentsNoeline McCaughan - This bring back a childhood memory of a Greymouth man named Montgomery. He was a friend of my father and had a plane that he flew regularly, when World War 2 began his plane was needed by the N.Z.Airforce and he was to fly it from Greymouth to Auckland. The story goes that when he was landing at his destination the plane crashed and he was seriously injured, I believe he lost both legs. He had two sons whom I had met and I have always wondered how the story ended.

Don Hutton- I would agree with the date because the McBrearty Maternity Annexe in the background just above and beyond AFW on the fuselage was funded by Mickey Savage's "cradle to grave" social security policy about that time. My sister was born there in 1942. Theold Nurses Home is behind the woman's head. The aerodrome was a large grassy area with no runway. Tiger Moths and Fox Moths landed there quite regularly. Bert Maercer was a well known pilot.

Donald Pearson My brother learnt to fly in a tiger moth at the Greymouth Aerodrome prior to the war,after , joined the air force,trained further at Taeri then overseas to England,later in war flew Mosquito planes over Germany.
