By: Barry Thomson6th Dec 2020 2:57PMThanks to Lyn Brown for identifying Bill Noonan with the Linwood area of Christchurch. The images are definitely of the Billy we knew. The people you never forget. I spent the first couple of years of my primary education at Linwood North School before moving to the Coast. We lived in Carnarvon Street next the the McBeths, D. A. R. (Dave) McBeth, the carrier.
Billy Noonan was a bit older than me but we were all an interlinked like-thinking group of kids. Billy was a big presence as you will recall Lyn both physically and personality-wise with a broad, cheeky smile, rough and tumble approach, always encouraging physical activities at play time. When you think about it the die was cast then for the leadership and captaincy qualities that would characterise his sporting career.

Billy was a big framed kid with a great sense of justice and never used his size in a threatening manner as a kid, always looking out for us 'littlies'. I followed his Rugby League career with interest and a degree of envy for in pursuit of his Rugby League 'dream' he became a trail blazer at a time when few had the courage to do the same. Thanks to Billy for being a kind and encouraging school mate and the source of some great sporting entertainment. I'm sure that infectious broad smile still charms many.
