Great photo you think of gold it’s panning in rivers or mine shafts but look at all the building work in this photo so there were odviously a few carpenters around in the day

John Armstrong oh Yes. My 2 x great grandfather worked in the mines (as well as sawmill and cutting timber on his own land) all his life in the Reefton district, even managing mines at some points. His principle job was cutting props, but there were numerous mines that had sluiceways, flumes, ladders, wheels, aerial cableways etc etc all needing timber supports. It was a very necessary part of the process. Have you seen pictures of the huge system at the Lyell that brought the ore down from high above to the batteries? All timber. Someone had to source, cut and construct that.

I haven't seen this photo of the Elevators before. The larger winch house building in the centre was extended, from a small shed to what you can see in the photo, by my g-grandfather Andrew Bell. This photo is a closer view of the winch house and Andrew Bell is the tall gentleman standing in front. He was a carpenter on the Ross, Kaniere and Kumara gold fields. John Armstrong.
