Went to Jacksons school with Bill Edens Was a great place ,chasing wild cows, crossing the river, eeling, climbing the Perry range, steam trains were full on thoughs days, opposuming, could go on & on.
Great times as was about 11 & 12.

Good one. Bill Edens is good and well. He lives in ChCh and I live at Orewa, north of Auckland. We get together every year which is excellent. I will be with Bill next November, God willing with this damned Coronus Virus.

Shot my first Chamois on Mt Alexander about the same year. We used to come up from the Rotomanu track across the switchback onto the main Summitt. Was at High school with Bill, he was a year ahead of me.

Excellent Jim. Must remember to note your name and Bill Stephesons for when I see him next. He has an incredible memory and will, i'm sure, remember you both. Starting from Jacksons pub we used to cross the railway line over the river and traverse through the terrace, then up the stream which is practically opposite Jacksons and up the spurs from there. Hard yacka until you scrambled through the monkey scrub and with incredible relief suddenly discover you are on the tops.

Michael Nottingham Hi Michael, wow, it is good to hear from someone from that era. Mr and Mrs Edens was so good to us as kids. They were a great family. The Jacksons pub rocked in thoughs days. There was a team of railway workers camped there, must have been about 20 or so in railway huts. There was about 13 of us at the school there, was great. I live in Christchurch myself and have caught up with Bill. Would be good to meet you when you come down and talk about thoughs days. I stayed at the Dillions in the Taipo Valley myself. Michael Nottingham My father moved to Rotomanu when he got married after the war. He would catch the 6:00am “paper train” at Rotomanu and get off at Jacksons . Then cross the river just like you did and up onto the tops. Then he would work his way round toward Lake Poerua, Camp creek and down back home before dark. In those years there were still huge mobs of up to 100 deer in the basins.

Interesting Bill, yes the Edens family were, and are, wonderful people. When a teenager I would regularly go over from ChCh and stay either at the pub or one of the little railway huts down from the Perry Range (Jacksons) hotel. Bill and I did two trips in two days to the tops, enthusiastic and fit hunters in those days, or perhaps, gluttons for punishment and a little mad.. At the time Ray Fraser was one of our hunting cobbers. Bill & I went into the Taipo not so long ago. The original old hut is still there with photos of the Dillons adorning the walls. Not far from the hut is a relatively new DOC hut, however, it doesn't have the charm and character as the original.
