"Squalor, want and misery in a world teeming with wealth have to go, and the people who give really useful service must be treated like human beings. They must be given a patch of land to live on, a home to shelter them, decent food, good clothing to put on their backs, their children should be given the fullest opportunity to develop their God-given faculties, and they should be given a chance to make preparation for old age." Goodness, I wouldn't have recognised him, I only kew him when I was very young, he would call for a talk with my father whenever he was in Reefton and would pick me up and sit me on this knee and bounce me up and down. I met him again when we move to the North Island and we had a visit to parliament where dad met up with some of his old. campaigners including Mr Semple and Paddy Webb.and .

Bob Semple was famous for the powerful and colourful invective of his speeches. He was a remarkable outdoors speaker in the days when street-corner meetings were very well attended. As Minister of Public Works in the 1935 M J Savage Labour govt, Semple was a very popular "hard case" figure.

My grandmother used to tell the story of when Semple was Minister of Works. He arranged for a friends son to get s job in the Transport Dept. After a couple of weeks Semple received a telegram saying the young man could barely read or write. Semple sent a two word reply "learn him".
