About this image
DescriptionYesterday I was lent an old Hokitika District High School magazine dating back to 1939. It contains two pages of autographs one of which is reproduced here along with part of the school roll and the mag cover. The mag is called the "Victorian" presumably after the first school on the site which was called Victoria High School after queen Victoria.Date of Photo1939Map[1] ContributorGlenn Johnston

The item was lent to me because my mothers name had been spotted on the school roll and among the autographs. I recall a number of the people who appear on the school roll. The vast majority of this generation have now passed on with the odd survivor being in their nineties.

Good post Glen. The school magazine is a great tradition, it would be good to see more, how far back they go etc
Vincent Knapp
One i see would be maybe Peter Kirwin he used to have nice cars lived in Hokitika
Sandra Douglas
Vincent Knapp also was long time member kokatahi band .
Lynnette Beirne
My late brother in law Bill Gutberlet and uncle Bob Atkinson both feature on the class lists
Alan Davidson
Our Mother ( resident at Allen Bryant) was Solway School (Waiarapa) athletic champion about 1936/37, and sports cups adorned our fireplace mantle in Bealey Street. Dad's (George) claim to fame relied on the Victorian School magazine. There was a sentence extolling his prowess over a mile. I have no idea where that magazine got to, but it was great to laugh and remanence.
Glenn Johnston
Alan Davidson In this 1939 edition; Senior Boys One Mile Championship: G. Davidson 1, J. Ashley 2, J. Veale 3. Championship points all events Senior Boys; D. Johnston 1st, G. Davidson 2nd & J. Veale 3rd. G. Davidson also won the West Coast Interschools Senior Boys One Mile race in 1939.
Arlene Hutcheon
My dad has some copies of 'The Victorian', he was a student there 1950ish, I think, Ron Havill.
Carol Linklater
So many names there I recognise bringing back many memories for me.

Here is another page of the school roll from 1939. Third former here Colin Howat was off fighting in WW2 less than 6 years later. Others enrolled in 1939 from these or more senior classes probably also fought in WW2. Colin Thomas from the same class as Colin Howat had an older brother, Dick, who fought in WW2.
Glenn Johnston
Dave Lyes; I presume you spotted D. Lyes in the same class as my mother J. Goodfellow?
Dave Lyes
Glenn Johnston for some reason I cant see the other page? Hmmmm
Dave Lyes
Glenn Johnston ahhhh yes found it now. Thanks for that, yes I see them both now. Thanks.
Tania Newman
When I was there - '77 to '80 - it was called Freeze Peach (Free speech) & my brother, Keith Gilbertson, was part of it. Still have a few issues
Glenn Johnston
Hi Tania, Freeze Peach newspaper was founded when I was at High School. Mr Rolfe a Canadian teacher started it as a project with one of his fifth form classes. There was also a more formal publication called Pounamu that was more like the earlier "Victorian" school mag though it was only produced
Glenn Johnston
Editors of Pounamu including teachers Miss Davison & Mr Hooper slipped up one year not spotting pupil Philip Routhan had put his name to a plagiarised poem. Mr Hooper used to have his class write poetry with the best from various classes being accepted for publication. I recognised Phil's contribution as having come from a hunting book written by Jack McNair and was quite surprised to discover the editorial team had been conned when reading the finished mag.
Dave Lyes
Glenn Johnston 5LT I think was Mr Rolfes class that did the freeze peach. I was in it, but I dont think I had any involvement in its production.
