DescriptionWho can spot the overgrown historic benched track in these two recent photos. The locality is in the head of the South Branch of the Mokihinui River near Lyell Saddle. The recently constructed "Old Ghost Road" track is not far away but instead of following this piece of historic track it zig zags its way up to the tops north of Bald Hill on a new formation. That was a blazed track down into the south branch of the mokihinui I dont think it was ever benched like the rest of the track. Went down it a couple of times in the 1960s and it was a bit rough.

Flag Mckenzie the first 3/4 km or so below Lyell Saddle down into the Sth Branch was benched then they gave up benching. See the attached map. My photos are from the bit of benching below Lyell Saddle (NW) before the benching stopped.

Glenn Johnston Cheers Glenn I didnt think it was benched all the way down to the river. The last time I was down it was 1967 so the memories not to sharp. The south branch was fairly bouldery for a few ks and the country pretty broken and steep. May be why the track never went that way.
