DescriptionThese whitebait stands are on the Ōkuru estuary in South Westland. Ropes and pulleys raise the structures above damaging floods. Screens placed in slots along the stand create barriers that baffle the whitebait as they swim alongside river banks where the current is slacker. Trying to find a way past the screen, the fish move to its outer edge, and enter a net.

Yep they were the glory days. Funny thing is nothing has changed to this day. Take as much as you can. No wonder I can't catch some for My grandkids!

My mum had a whitebait stand on the Okuru river . One day she had such a good catch that dad and the neighbour both had to lift her sock net out. Her net was pretty full. The other net had lots in too but not as much as the other one. That would of been mid 80's

Both my parents had a stand on the Taramakau in the early 60's - kerosene tins full - Dad gave it away, we ate BIG PATTIES, curried whitebait, whitebait in milk and what was left, Dad put it in the garden.

One of the old identities of the Okuru River..The late Alister Cameron fished that stand for many years. Alistair was a true gentleman and along with his wife they would of caught tonne's of whitebait over the many years they fished the Okuru River.
