Charmaine Andresen I did! The man who owned the The Hokitika Bookstore, had just purchased it and he invited us to tour it at noon on Sunday. I cried!!

I don’t have a lot of info on the house. When I went to Hokitika in 2014, we drove straight to the house and parked in front. I found this tibbit on Papers Past a few years ago. The house was build tin 1900. Real Estate believes it was years later.

Cheryl Heiskanen Fazzini details I have say it was built 1898, the fire affected the kitchen and back part and we were up in the roof not long ago and can still see the scorch marks in the timber. The house has been extensively renovated inside and out. If I find some more details I’ll pm them to you.

James was married 3 times, his first wife Jean Park was my Great Grandmother. She had three children with him and died from Cancer when they were early teens. The two sons James and Hugh became lawyers and both went to Fiji to practice law. One came back and worked in Hokitika as a lawyer. The daughter Muriel (I wonder if they named her after Muriel Falls) was going to be one of the first female doctors in NZ, but her dad asked her to come home from school and nurse her stepmother and children, and then told her he couldnt pay for medical school and she became a nurse. The second wife Marion Bain Jack, is the Mrs. Park the fire story is referring to. She had three children, Archie (Meg Kendall’s grandfather) and Eric and James. James died in 1929 in a flood hiking in the alps. It broke his dad’s heart. There is a memorial hut for hikers named for him. Marion died in 1910 from cancer and that is when James launched his boat Waikaita a few months after. Third wife, Isabella Wilson, married him 1915 and when he died in 1931, the family fought her over the inheritance and they won. My moms cousin told me Isabella, put all the “Park Family treasures” in a closet and locked it. Rented the house and went to live with her spinster sisters in Hokitika. After her death they opened the closet to a pile of junk. She died in 1950.
