DescriptionGrowing up as a kid in Hoki I would often look to the visible hills and mountains that seemed close and wonder about what it was like up there. Over the years such questions were answered by climbing these hills. A lot of the hills hold much historic significance. For instance Tuhua and Tara Tama were and still are very important to Maori. Smart and French were both early gold prospectors, Bowen and Reeves were political figures, Cairn peak is descriptive of the top, Griffin, O'Connor, Kerr, Treacey etc. commemorate early settlers?
There is a lot of history to be learnt just following up on names in the landscape! Who has connections to any of these hills either as a descendent of who they were named after or the person who did the naming? See LessMap^[1]ContributorGlenn Johnston
