About this image
DescriptionGeorge Gillingham who had worked for William Dickie for some years took over the business on the death of Dickie, and conducted the enterprise for some years until he was drowned in the 7 Mile Creek, north of Rapahoe,delivering stores to his customers along the north coast.
George Armstrong was next to own this store and bakery and some years later built another store nearby to cope with the increased demand.In the late 20`s John Walker and his two sons purchased the store and bakehouse from George Armstrong... then later sold it to Jas.Nimmo and Sons.The Nimmos ran the business for 40 years.

I see my Grandad James and his sister Annie Gillingham (m George Gillingham) in front of him to the left. I grew up in Hokitika and moved to Te Kuiti. Not me - but my cousins Dot & Sherylanne went from Greymouth to Upper Hutt.

Ron Stewart and I always called in to see his Aunt Anne who married George Gillingham they were a lovely couple later moved away they lived in a house opposite the Greymouth railway station over the rail bridge and had a great view of all the travellers we called my daughter Ann after Anne she formily was Anne Durrie I think

Yes. Here is a photo of Jim’s grandmother, Elizabeth Cumming, born Perthshire. A wing of the Gore municipal bldg is named after the fellow in bottom LH cnr James Cumming (Jessie’s brother)
