Looking for gold in the hope of exchanging for money. Tough, no benefits in those days.

Not sure they're gold mining. More likely to be removing spoil from a shingle slide encroaching a road ??

Thanks Heather, i was born in Karamea in 54, always been a gold miner,
During the 29 depression era up the Fenian gold fields if you were working the local policeman would stamp your ration card too entile you too keep your gold and be supplied with some ration food for your honesty the government was worried sick about the west coasters revolting , exactly the same system was used here in Australia a Ration card system, sort of like Job seekers payments here now,
