About this image
DescriptionGlenn Johnston
I visited the former Totara Flat Hotel this afternoon and can confirm that this is indeed the mystery pub in the photo. The background hills are the identical shape and one of the other buildings is still there. Some doors, windows etc are still the same post renovations as in the early 1960's photo. The two chimneys still on the building are in the same positions as the old photo. Those saying the Heather Bell at Totara Flat can not be the mystery pub are wrong! There is ample depth at the back for it to be the same building. It just doesn't show from photos taken from the road post renovations; when the gable windows were added, roof lines changed and an addition made to the porch. Mystery solved!

It could definitely be the same building in the two pics. In the earlier pic you have 7 verandah posts from the left and a hip roof no dormer windows. In the later pic it looks like they,ve changed the roof to a gable and wrapped the verandah roof around the corner which has required another post thus giving it 8 posts from the left. When you look at the chimmney in the 1st pic it corresponds approximately to where it pops out through the roof in the later pic. Proximity to the road looks right and the power pole just past the pub looks the same in both pics.

Richard Biddulph yes it is, we lived across the road from it in the 60’s. Roof line and veranda modernised in later years.
Cheryl Hutchison

I'm driving north this afternoon and will eyeball the backdrops of several Grey Valley pubs. I am now reasonably sure that this is the Heather Bell Hotel at Totara Flat pre modifications that added gabled windows and changed the roof lines.
Helen Joan Forrest
Looks like the hotel in Totara Fl
Helen Joan Forrest
Totals Flat.
Sheryl Locke
I thought it was the mahinapua hotel south of Hokitika. It's set back. The totara hotel isn't set back, it's right on the main road which makes me think it's not totara.
Esther Bruns
Cobden?

There were houses on the Reefton side at the Junction. I reckon it looks more like The Totara Flat.
Alison Row
Arthur Bass good eye their Arthur I'd say you are spot on !
Ian Schroder
Did totara flat pub have mobilgas pump in the front
Sue Seymour
Ian Schroder yes it did back in the day, right in front of the outside men’s toilets!!
Jeff Moore
Totara Flat
Jim Galloway
I would put it as the Heather Bell, as i remember it in the old days. Not many pubs had the Mobil Gas pumps in the front.
Peter Armstrong
Jim Galloway Be quite handy to tell your wife you're just ducking down to the pub to fill up the car!!
Jim Galloway
Well in those days the cars used more petrol, and if you lived in the area she would be the place to go. Also the petrol was much cheaper, so you could have a couple out of the change..
Margaret Grant
I dont ever remember the house on the left if it Totara Flat.
Jim Galloway
Margaret Grant I think that is the house Russel Woolhouse lived in and had a shop in the front at one stage. Mason suit a new house between that one and the pub but it was set back further from the road.
Margaret Grant
Jim Galloway
Margaret Grant
Jim Galloway yes I forgot that Lac has said its Totara Flat.
Wendy Calteaux
Wally Osullivan I think your right it does look like The Pioneer
Wally Osullivan
Wendy Calteaux I'm pretty sure they had a fire place, where the chimney is back in the day in the other photo Wendy..
Wendy Calteaux
Wally Osullivan yup I think so
Phil Olson
Totara flat pub before renovations. Looking east the house just up the road, hills in the distance, power poles etc all confirm the place but the pub has been altered a long time ago and after this photo as taken. The sun shadow confirms that this photo is taken looking east up the grey valley toward Ikamatua.Glenn Johnston

Cheryl Hutchison
Glenn Johnston Thank you Glen . You have confirmed with your research. Much aporeciated

Definitely not Mawheraiti. The fireplaces are towards the back of the building there and it has two entrances off the verandah, one at each end, at right angles to the road.
Fraser Mitchell
Glen Johnston. Thanks for being on the spot. I've not been down that way fir many years. In 65/66 I was the Stationmaster at Ikamatua and the publican at TF was Bud Ramsay who I had dealings with from time to time. Pub has certainly been given a major … See More
