In the mid 1960's Barney enlisted his mates at the Greymouth Rotary Club to help prepare the site. I went with my Dad to several working bee's.

He was a lovely man. I used to go into the jewellers with my mother and grandmother. He was the same when i went home and took my boys to Shanty town working around the village sometimes the only person working there.

So many great memories of Shantytown. First as a child, then taking my own kids there. And hopefully my grandchildren one day.

I was a relieving Manager of Commercial Bank of Australia and recall Mr Sutherland calling at the bank and asking for his locked box which was in our safe for security. When he opened it, it was full of fine gold flakes and very heavy. He filled a small marmite jar with gold and we returned the locked box to the strong room. He said he used the gold flakes to “salt” the gold bearing earth at Shantytown to ensure each tourist would find something when panning for gold. This would have been about 1980.

Bill Day when I first went gold panning there in the late 1970s my Mum took one look at the gravel and what eventually came out, and everyone else getting exactly the same out of their pans and said. "Humpf - looks like they are salting the pans" I still have my wee jar of flakes.

We recently visited for the third time and enjoyed it, but felt there was some tension there, maybe the lack of foreign tourists? But we loved the lack of bustle and queues and the ability to really read and muse over the information and items
Always presumed they were salting the pans but loved doing it anyway. But my sisters gold flakes turned green over a few years?!
