About this image
DescriptionKeith Funnell.."I believe that prior to WW2 Glyn Jones started out at McGregor’s drapery in Blackball, and managed McGregor’s shop in Waiuta. I believe the Jones family may have been from Roa. His parents were Welsh, hence his name. They were from Faversham I think, which was (is) between Blackball and Roa."

The bus is wearing a black number plate so the photo date is not before 1 July 1965.
Geoffrey King
The shop between Kilgours book shop and Craig Thompson Chemist was Herb Moore's Menswear.
Annie Swain
If someone knows who the woman and children are the photo might be able to be dated more accurately.
Geoffrey King
Annie Swain It is later than 1965 because permanent car number plates were introduced through out the Country using the first alphabet letter like A's B's C's in 1964 and a couple of years later trucks and buses began using permanent plates. The Bus has a number plate DH...? (a bit hard to read)
Annie Swain
Geoffrey King Commercial vehicles had to have their new plates displayed by 1 July 1965. After the initial issue of plates in 1964 for cars the rest of the distribution was very random and it is near impossible to date vehicles from the 1965-70 era by their plates. Most of the South Island commercials got D plates of various sorts in 1965 - Chch got DU and DV plates - all of the CTB red buses got DV plates. Many North Island vehicles got E series plates - EO and ES were common. My 1965 Pontiac car got an F series plate when first registered in Napier in late 1965. One of the big post offices in Chch was still issuing DJ plates as late as 1972. This is the initial 1964 distribution of plates - cars only. Even light car-based vans were regarded as commercials and had to wait a year.

Glyn Jones and Charlie McBride were regular visitors to Sth Westland with a van loaded with the type of clothes you needed in that area. Thiis was in the late 50s early 60s. Two of the most likeable men ,who if they didnt have it would get it for you.

I recall Jones and McBride shop was next to Trumans and Keatings Grocers in Mackay street. Think he later moved to Tainui street and Bob's Bargain Bar took over the initial one.
