At about 1885 John & Hannah Mosley left County Durham to make a new life in NZ with their two boys, William and Lancelot. They had a very rough 5 month[week?] journey. Most of it the women & children spent below deck. John as a cabinet maker had work in Wellington but decided to go with friends he'd made on the journey. Hannah gave birth to twins (one died) on arrival in Greymouth. She was a very "strong" lady & made sure her large family were well educated and learnt a trade.

Average time of passage was 100 days ( 3 months) but could take longer due to weather. 5 weeks is too short: it took a week to cross the Tasman

That looks to me like Alec Mosley on the right at the back. They were family friends of ours in Greymouth, his daughters Olwyn and Beverley were my good friends. His wife was Ada who was a good friend of my mother’s.

Bill (son) and Sarah Mosely were our neighbours in Preston Road. Bill was custodian of the council dump in Blaketown and he brought home many treasures from the dump. Apparently many shops such as Woolworths and McKenzies would throw a lot of stuff out with the packing. We kids often scavenged at the dump but Bill would chase us off.

My brother's godparents were Dick and Min Mosley, wonder if Dick was related? He was an engineer in Waiuta.

What a lovely family. Strived to come to NZ, worked hard, beautifully attired. Had losses and hardship, but just got on with it and all without the handouts and Government assistance that is expected today. These people are great examples of so much that we are lacking in the 'here and now'.Yvonne Jean
