Interesting that the road lower down is on the north side of the hill. The original coach road went up the south side to the saddle that can be seen in this photo. Not sure when the change occurred.

I have heard tales of coach travel on that route from the older generations. My grandmother and aunt were travelling in one which was involved in an accident and fortunately they were not hurt.

I was Principal at Otira School for three and a half years. Jocelyn, my wife was my teacher, and we got a third teacher, Shirley Turner I in our last year there were two more teachers after we left, then the school closed down, it was the beginning of the end for Otira as a viable town. We loved it there in spite of the rain, and the school was growing. Sad to see a vibrant little village die like that.

My father Jim Wall and hectot Tainui did most of the bulldozer work at otira when they put the road opposite the coach track other did of the river early 50s
