My father was born in Otira in 1911 his father worked on Otira tunnel & my grandmother ran a boarding house for tunnel workers

Mine was hot up in the copound it burned to the ground with everything I owned except the work cloths I was wearing I had withdrawn All my savings because I was getting married in two weeks So married life started with nothing. That was 55 yrs ago

It must have been like living in the worst place on earth my great uncle Bob Gibbons lived in these huts and said the condition were really bad in the winter
