I first went to Whataroa Christmas 1951 to spend with uncle Tommy Nolan and auntie Dot , Mum, Dad my sister Carol a Baby left Kaianga Ch-Ch at 8 o'clock in the morning and we arrived 12 hours later at Whataroa traveling , Arthurs pass ( heavy weather ) in a 1938 Morris 8 car . At 75 this year that occasion is still vivid and a memory for ever . Was impressed The diesel engine running the Nolan milking shed , Paul Nolan in his fathers car under age a kid like me driving around the town. But a host of events like the trip to Okarito ( Ken and the white Herons ) and the pub at the Forks and more.

George Thackwell In 1944 during the war i drove my brothers Austin 7 to school , would drive my buddy Ken Douglas home , local cop went to my Dad , told cop he can handle it ! I lived on flat rd ,,, Left Whataroa 1946, Never get away with that these days

7 to school, used to take my buddy home Ken Douglas down flat rd , cop never liked it , went to my Dad , he told cop he can handle it , started when I was 11 , never had any incidents! NEVER GET Away with that nowadays ! , Never knew Paul Nolan drove , he was a lot younger than me .... 87 now
