Our brother in law and sister had a dairy farm in Kowhitirangi, he still lives there.

The name on the hall is Koiterangi, the church next door uses Kowhiterangi. Why is that we may well ask? Any theories anyone?

Kowhiterangi is correct, Koiterangi is poor pronunciation.

Tamai Sinclair Could be a bit of both. Southern Māori dialect had a few differences. Wh was not the f sound, ng was pronounced as k. Aorangi was Aoraki. Kowhi as Koi is a bit lazy I think.

I have fond memories of going to this hall for school events and concerts, christmas parties and remember it being used for indoor bowls by the local farmers. Even santa knew where to come for the school kids.. The homemade suppers of delicious cakes, sausage rolls, cream sponge, lamingtons. This was back in the early 1960"s.

we on the South Island should pronounce the "wh" as in where. I am sure the early settlers heard the "wh" that way and not the hard "f" as in fly.
