The Kumara Reservoir was originally constructed to provide water to a gold claim situated on the North bank of the Teremakau river at Payns Gully.The water intake was above Dillmanstown and was piped to the gold claim with a bridge over the river. I believe that the bridge foundations can still be seen.
The pipeline was shortened back in the 1930/40 and provided water to a small Hydro Electric plant owned by the Westland Power Board.

Have great memories and some not so great exploring up the Wainihinihi river in my youth with my Father when the Dillmans hydro project was just an idea.
We were looking for a tunnel that was shown on an old map that was used to funnel water to a race that would eventually end up in a sluice gun.
Later when idea came to reality, a new water intake was built , along with 4 others from memory, and the tunnel and water races reopened to carry water which would eventually end up in the lake behind Dillmans Town.

When I was an appentice at the foundry a pipe pipe for the hydro wood burst a we would have to make a new one and fit the joining rings on them quite an easy job but the joints had to be done right
