We had a standing order at the Norcasa every Friday. Dad would start at Jones book shop in Mackay st, get the "Dandy" and the "Beano", two comics, then on to our fish n chips. The fish n chips was a catholic thing forbidding meat on Fridays, long since been discontinued.
Lyn Gosling
I think Norcasa was the Fish & Chip shop next to my parent's shop (Cohen's Garden Centre) in Mackay Street. I have fond memories of getting Fish and Chips from next door on Friday "Late night shopping" nights and sharing them as a family in the "back room". of the shop. Such a treat.
Shirley Barrow
Friday, or maybe Saturday, nights, many yrs ago, we would grab our kids, off to my cousin's place, fish and chips for tea, several different games, then home feeling tired, full but very happy. Fish and chip shop still going in same place in Christchurch, New Zealand, wonderful memories as cousin passed away.
Murray Bradley
We got ours at my grandads shop , was Mundys Cafe then Intemanns Cafe.
Del Godfrey
Friday night was always fish and chip night as we grew up, Catholic night, no red meat on Friday
Johnny Morris
I think that was because Roman Catholics weren’t allowed to eat meat on Fridays
Greg Hine
If there was one photo that depicted the undivided, affordable and happy NZ that I miss, I reckon this is it!
David Howe
Actually Monday night was our fish and chip night. It was washing and ironing day for Mum, and this saved her having to get tea ready. It was a boil in the copper washing day, and sheets were the first in. It took her all day to do the washing and ironing for six of us. Dad bought Mum a washing machine when he could afford it, but Mum refused to use it. But Dad had the copper taken out, and she had no choice. I hated Monday morning as she would come into the bedroom and wanted the sheets that we were sleeping on. Tough luck Son, the sheets have to be washed. And she would make us get out of bed and take them away.
Dianne Johnson
Oh, I can taste it still. Friday night fish and chips were the best ever, and always wrapped in proper newspaper.
Terry MJ
I remember paying 6p (sixpence) for two pieces of fish and a heap of chips from our Fish and Chip shop in Bright St, Cobden in the early 50's. It might have even been threepence. Didnt know what inflation was in those days, haha !!!!!

I remember when Dad had the Gilmer Hotel my brother & I would bike up to get the fish & sausage bites plus chips for the counter lunch. Joke at the time was Dad asked for extra salt so they would drink more. That wouldn't suprise me. Six large parcels on our bike carriers & going like hell rain, hail or sunshine to get them there on time.

I remember the big wooden bins of battered (part cooked?) fish at Tony’s, dinner wrapped in newspapers and a hurried drive home to carters beach before it went cold. The fish was incredibly meaty and was twice cooked I think? Perhaps it might have been shark in those days. Is there anyone in the group who might of worked at Tony’s and can shed some light on the fish used in the 1970s and how it was prepared? Was it blue shark? it was so good.
