When I was principal at Moonlight, 1972 - 74, we would visit the old dredge with visitors. My boys and I would also help Ash Jefferies muster his sheep off his land that had the dredge on it.
The tailings were a great place for blackberry picking.

In the book written about moonlight by its various residents ,my mother Maureen Doolan amongst them ,is an extensive coverage of the dredging at moonlight .Mums brother Maurice at one stage was dredge master on the moonlight dredge.

Kerry Molloy Dan and Nancy Doolan lived across the road from the school house. Nancy ran the local post office.

Dennis Gibbs Granny ran that post office solo for 38yrs and on her retirement NZ post graciously acknowledged her services.i have many lovely memories of moonlight and its residents(a few of whom i was related to,although all are now deceased apart from Jim and Michael Doolan.

Les Bryce youd better check and see if were related then .Igot a wee touch thatta way to on a clan holiday in fiji .was a bit of a putoff though when the guy strained the bloody kava stuff through what looked like a week old unwashed MOW bootsock.me -about two half coconut shells fulland me dial started to go numb!!potent stuff but apparently only10%of the real deal!

I could and will one day tell you a wee tale about her!re the dentist -got two of me original fangs left in me bottom jaw -one as wobbly as a pissed poli so shortly ill be gettin me into a chair for a yankx2 then a lower jaw full of plastic.could you hold me hand Leslie dear????

When I was a kid there were only two blackberry bushes on the West Coast. ... One each side of the road from Karamea to the Haast Pass!

I grow a blackberry bush on the north-facing fence in my garden. It's the prickle-less variety. Have picked about a couple of kgs so far this season and almost as many still maturing on the vine. My sister, Janet, is a dab-hand at transforming them into blackberry-jelly jam. Highly recommended !!
